Transform Lives as a Foster Parent
At The Humane Society of the Western Communities, our foster program is at the heart of our mission to save and enrich pets' lives. Our foster families experience immense joy and satisfaction, knowing they've given a neglected pet a second chance at life and happiness in a forever home. By joining our foster program, you'll not only witness the transformation of your foster pet but also the joy of the families that welcome them.
Foster Program Guidelines
Health and Safety First
- Quarantine Period: All foster pets must be isolated from personal pets until cleared by a vet of contagious illnesses. We recommend a minimum quarantine of 10 days.
- Foster Coordinator: Your main point of contact for guidance and support throughout your foster journey.
- Group Separation: Keep animals from different litters separate until they receive veterinarian clearance.
- Event Participation: Foster pets ready for adoption should attend weekly adoption events to find their forever homes, barring any medical or behavioral exceptions.
Supporting Our Fosters
- Supplies: We provide food, de-wormer, crates, bowls, leashes, and necessary medications. Notify your foster liaison for additional supplies or emergencies.
- Medical Care: Monitor the health of your foster pet and report any concerns. Regular deworming and vaccinations are required, following our medical guidelines.
- Spay/Neuter: All foster pets will be spayed or neutered once they're healthy and of age, coordinated by your foster liaison.
The Foster Experience
Bringing a pet into your home is an act of kindness that echoes. While fostering, you'll navigate various challenges, from managing health issues to socializing young animals. Every pet in our program is vaccinated, tested, microchipped, and treated for parasites to prepare them for a successful adoption.
Foster to Forever: Our thorough adoption process ensures each pet finds the perfect match. If you're approached about adopting your foster pet, direct interested parties to our website to complete an application. Your involvement in the adoption process is welcome, from screening to meet-and-greets at our adoption events.
Your Role and Impact
As a foster parent, you'll keep in regular contact with your foster coordinator, documenting your foster pet's health, behavior, and milestones. Your commitment is vital to our mission, whether you're hands-on at adoption events or prefer to support from behind the scenes.
